Partnership of OriginOil with Desmet Ballestra

OriginOil, a leading algae process development company from Los Angeles,
California, USA has announced a partnership with Desmet Ballestra for
commercializing their patent pending algae oil extraction technology.

OriginOil has developed a novel process for lysing algae cells and separating the oil from the spent algal biomass and water in a single step. By extracting algae oil in the water-rich phase, significant energy savings can be realized by minimizing dewatering and drying energy.

Desmet Ballestra will be working closely with OriginOil to further evaluate and scale up the algae oil extraction technology.
Our mutual goal is to offer pilot scale extraction systems to the algae oil industry in the near future.

New large Biodiesel Plant operational in the Netherlands

The company Rosendaal Energy, based in Sluiskil (Netherlands), reports the start up of its new Desmet Ballestra Biodiesel production plant.

Bart Rosendaal says: " This plant is based on three pillars. We are multi-feedstock: basically we can use any sort of oil. We are not tied to the supply of one particular raw material. That flexibility ensures that, if there are any market changes, we will be well able to adapt. Apart from that we definitely wanted to be at a big sea port so everything can be delivered to us directly, without intermediate storage, which saves a considerable amount of money. Thirdly we wanted to build a plant as big as possible in order to have the lowest costs per ton of biodiesel. When we negotiated the construction of this plant we were guaranteed an annual production of 250,000 tons.

"The petroleum ministry has recommended a mixture of 20 per cent biofuel with 80 per cent diesel, minimising sulphur and particulate emissions.

"We, however, have run vehicles on B40 (40 per cent biofuel and 60 per cent diesel) without any modification of the engine mechanism," a senior official of Emami Biotech told.

Laxman Seth, CPI-M MP for Haldia and chairman of the Haldia Development Authority said: "It's good news indeed. In the near future, we will have to switch from petrol and diesel to the use of biofuel as it is eco-friendly and will also cut down on the need of crude oil import."

Only 710 miles of the flight were powered by a mixture of 50% biodiesel and 50% standard jet fuel. The 50/50 fuel mix was used to compare performance data and demonstrate the capability of blending biodiesel with existing jet fuel supplies.

Green Flight International (www.greenflightinternational.com) was founded in 2006 to promote wider adoption of environmentally-friendly fuels in commercial aviation through international television media and print outlets. Michael L. Noble, President of Lake Erie Biofuels states, “Our accomplishment with Green Flight International marks a vital breakthrough for the mass transportation industry and sets the stage for future growth. We congratulate Green Flight International, and are proud of our role in providing the aviation industry with environmentally friendly, clean, petroleum substitutes. This is something we can all take pride in.”

Ultrapar announces investment in plant for fatty alcohols and derivatives

ULTRAPAR PARTICIPAÇÕES S.A., a company engaged in distribution of LPG (Ultragaz), production of chemicals (Oxiteno) and logistic services for chemical products and fuels (Ultracargo), hereby announces that it will invest, through Oxiteno, approximately US$ 94 million during the next two years in the construction of a fatty alcohols production plant, with co-production of fatty acids and glycerin in the Petrochemical Complex of Camaçari, in the state of Bahia. The total production capacity should amount approximately 100,000 tons per year, considering the entire product line.

These products are currently imported and already widely used in Oxiteno’s surfactants product line. In 2004, South American imports of fatty alcohol amounted to about 50,000 tons, with Brazil responsible for around 90% of this consumption. Oxiteno is the largest consumer of fatty alcohols in Brazil, and we estimate that 30% of the total volume produced by the new plant will be used by the company itself.

This plant will be a pioneer unit in Latin America for the production of fatty alcohols. Fatty alcohol is the raw material heavily used in the manufacture of specialty chemicals derived from ethylene oxide, widely used in the production of personal care products, and also has various applications in house cleaning products (cleansing agents, powder and liquid-based detergents and fabric softeners), agrochemicals and textiles, among others.

Besides adding value to this existing product line, the new plant is expected to generate additional net sales of US$ 80 million/year when running at full capacity.
The main raw materials to be used in the new plant are of a natural origin, such as palm kernel and coconut vegetable oils.

Oxiteno reports to have selected jointly Desmet Ballestra and Davy Process Technologies as technical partners for the supply of the new fatty acids, glycerin and fatty alcohol plant.

Desmet Ballestra will supply the following technologies: fats splitting, fatty acids fractionation and hydrogenation, sweet water purification and concentration, glycerin distillation and refining.

Davy Process Technologies will supply  the following technologies: fatty acids esterification, methylestershydrogenation and fatty alcohols refining.

It will be the first world scale oleochemical complex in Latin America.
